Accessible State Agency Website Design for APTAT
See how Desert Wing Design created an accessible state agency website with an integrated LMS for online training, certification, and public engagement.
Project Overview
APTAT is Alabama’s Assistive Technology Act Program, helping individuals access tools that promote independence.
They approached Desert Wing Design to redesign their outdated and inaccessible website into a professional platform that supports free services, statewide resources, and online learning.
This project demonstrates how effective accessible state agency website design can enhance reach and impact.

The Challenge
Before our collaboration, APTAT faced several challenges common to state and public service programs:
- Outdated design that didn’t reflect their mission
- Difficult navigation and no mobile optimization
- Lack of accessibility features
- No online training or certification system
- Poor organization for programs and events
These issues limited usability and made it hard for the public to find information or access services.
Our Approach
We began with our Website Workshop to define goals and strategy. From there, our team:
- Delivered a clean, accessible layout for clarity and usability
- Built the site on WordPress for flexible content management
- Applied WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards
- Integrated an LMS for courses, feedback, and certificates
- Improved navigation to highlight events and resources
This custom solution reflects best practices in accessible state agency website design.

The Results
The new website aligns with APTAT’s mission while providing an inclusive, user-friendly experience. It was launched at a state conference and received outstanding feedback from staff, partners, and attendees.
APTAT continues with ongoing website management that includes accessibility monitoring, remediation, and content updates.
